Kano Pillars defender Chinedu Udoji is dead following a car crash which happened just a few hours after playing in a league game on Sunday, February 18.
Udoji played all 90 minutes as Kano Pillars were held 1-1 at home by Enyimba in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game at the Sani Abacha Stadium.
A few hours after the game, the defender was on his way home from the stadium when he was involved in a car crash.
According to a statement from Kano Pillars, the ex-Enyimba defender had visited his former colleagues before going home.
"Chinedu Udoji was involved in a car accident yesterday after visiting his former teammates at Enyimba. This tragic accident happened along Club Road in Kano,” Pillars announced via their official Twitter account.
“Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, fans, and football"lovers all across the country."
The veteran defender played for Enyimba for several seasons before leaving to join Kano Pillars in 2017.
"We are distraught at the news of the passing of club legend and former captain, Chinedu Udoji. Our commiserations are with his family at this time," Enyimba also confirmed.
Udoji is survived by his pregnant wife and a son.
Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye also took to Twitter to mourn the passing of the defender who was once called up to the national team.
“Man is so very vulnerable. He cannot even predict or control what happens to him a few seconds away. This should make him very grateful and appreciative of every moment he is alive. #RIPChineduUdoji,” Ibitoye wrote on his Twitter account.
Several NPFL enthusiasts have also taken to Twitter to react to the death of the defender.
