The least stuffy way to wear a suit right now.
Tyler, the Creator is a T-shirt-and-shorts kind of guy, but in the most advanced of ways. The man's ability—not to mention confidence—to wear cropped wide-leg chinos is the reason we want to wear cropped wide-leg chinos. Tyler was a true Supreme New York fan years before the label went mainstream (i.e. got on the backs of everyone from David Beckham to Justin Bieber). But recently, Tyler's usually off-the-walls style has taken a more subtle turn (save for one particularly outlandish Grammys look). In recent weeks, Tyler's been spotted in trim trench coats, streamlined Dickies, and, surprisingly, a suit.
To be clear, it's not as though Tyler, the Creator is suddenly dressing like Tom Ford. His well-fitted suit was green, for one thing, and worn in a manner befitting a colorful character like Tyler: with a yellow sweatshirt, a chain necklace, a double "C" Chanel brooch, a pair of classic white Chuck Taylors (featuring some Tyler-y custom doodles), and topped off with a bucket hat. It's not quite the kind of suited look we'd suggest wearing to a job interview, but it's unquestionably an upgrade from the usual hoodie-and-sweats combo most guys favor to go around town.
The outfit is also a sign that pushing your style forward doesn't mean abandoning everything it stands for in the first place. Tyler's own line, Golf Wang, still traffics in graphic tees, flame-printed boxers, and pink Converse One Stars. Just because the man, who's about to turn 27 next month, wants to put on a suit sometimes doesn't mean he can't do it on his own terms. That's about as solid a style lesson as any we know of.
